Quite funny recently. i thought a software did not work, but I didn't consider unmuting "pulseaudio" channels. Also check alsa channels.

Sound is kinda borked in linux.

Do not use obsolet kernels with brand new hardware! Go for latest kernel.org stalbe release. unmask latest gentoo sources first !

bootup a recent livecd, e.g. linux mint and check if sound works there and which modules are loaded with which parameters.

you could alos use lspci -kk to get info on sound.

OP: please pastebin your kernel configuration so that we can see what sound cards and codecs you enabled. You may need to emerge app-text/wgetpaste first, since a new installation is unlikely to have it by default.
