Hi I'm trying to set up a desktop on my laptop. It uses a propitiatory nVidia drive. Nouveau was disabled when compiling the kernel.

When I run startx, all I get is a black screen. I can ctrl + alt + F1 and get back to the console, then kill startx.

There is a reference to Intel graphics in your dmesg, makes me think you may have Optimus graphics. Please confirm there is no Optimus before we can proceed.

The messages are appreciated, although we could use a bit more information on your system, if you can provide it. How did you create your xconfig by chance? Have you tried running nvidia-xconfig to see if that fixes it? One last quick idea from the top of my head: in what order did you compile your kernel? I've read posts where people who emerged nvidia-drivers before their kernel, or who recompiled their kernel without recompiling the nvidia-drivers afterward, ran into issues because of that.

You may try the first gentoo wiki link i posted. If it does not help / answer your post, than you may state, which type and model of your notebook, how the screen is connected to which gpu (or gpu passthrough via intel gpu) ...

also pay attention to config files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
