I have a mega-zillion files to suffer through according to etc-update, but most are listed with "(1)" after them...

What does that "(1)" mean? I can't find the answer. If it means that there is only the update and there is no existing config file, then I can save myself much agony by choosing -3 (or so I presume).

Whatever it means, it does not indicate a missing config file...

Code:
etc-update 2>&1 | sed -n -e 's@[^/]*\([^ ]*\).*@\1@p' | sort -u > foo
.. then enter -1 ...
for f in `cat foo` ; do ls $f 2>1 ; done | sed -n -e 's/\(^ls\: cannot\).*/\1/;tx;p;:x'

However, The above may be useful...

dpaddy ...

AFAIK that denotes the 'mode' ...

/etc/etc-update.conf:
# mode - 0 for text, 1 for menu (support incomplete)
# note that you need dev-util/dialog installed

... and modes 3, 5, 7, 9 are '--automodes' (see 'etc-update --help' and 'man etc-update').

best ... khay

It means the count of config protected files of that name. If you haven't handled it in a while, you might have upgraded something that had config file changes multiple times (and the upstream version differs from the previous unhandled one - otherwise etc-update will squash it itself on launch) - then you might have (2) there, then on filesytem you have ._cfg0000_krb5.conf.example AND ._cfg0001_krb5.conf.example - then the count is 2 and it'd show (2).
