Hello,

I'm trying to install Gentoo 20170413 with Easygentoo (https://github.com/shdcn/easygentoo)

I'm using Gentoo Live (USB) to install. I'll post all relevant information, for it might be used by others as a quick how-to-install Gentoo the easy way. Question / Problem at the end... Thanks!

--- Problem booting the live ISO...
I solved that by adding the following boot options:
Code:
acpi=off noapic nolapic nosmp dolvm scandelay

Gentoo boot hang at hwdetect.

---- Running the setup installation script after successful USB boot ...

I got root permissions by: sudo su - ; passwd.

I corrected the 'profile' file (https://github.com/shdcn/easygentoo/blob/master/README.md) to my likings and followed the instructions given.
Code:
## Easy Gentoo - Example Profile ##

## Note: if you want to use a default value, then you don't have to specify it

## keymap name (br, trq, trf or us...) - default: us
keymap us

## arch desired architecture (i686 or amd64) - default: detected by $(uname -m)
arch amd64

## grub where to install grub (hdc, sdb, sda3...) (none=disabled) - default: root partition
## grub none
grub sdb7

## type computer type (laptop or pc) - default: pc
type ps

## setup enable/disable audio/video codec USE flags (disabled for basic, enabled for normal) - default: basic
setup normal

## domainname domainname to use - default: easygentoo

## hostname hostname to use - default: freshinstall

## rootpass root password - default: toor
rootpass NotGonnaRepeatInThisCodeThankYouVeryMuch

## username your username - default: owner

## userpass your user password - default: resu
userpass NotGonnaRepeatInThisCodeThankYouVeryMuch

## autonet connection handling (reconnect with found network adapters if needed) - default: yes
autonet yes

## blimit bandwidth limit for installation (KB/s) (will not be active after setup finishes) - default: 0
blimit 0

Previously, I had another compile error that I solved with 'export CPPFLAGS="-P"'. So at my second installation attempt (AFTER a reboot), I'd export the variable in the root prompt (su). All files are located in /home/gentoo.

I think something awry with Perl? Because looking a bit higher in my console output, I find the following compile error (which didn't trigger an end-script):

Code:
>>> Emerging (6 of 14) dev-perl/libintl-perl-1.240.0::gentoo
>>> Failed to emerge dev-perl/libintl-perl-1.240.0

  Command:   emerge -e system

  Next packages (81 packages total):
    app-text/po4a-0.47::gentoo
    x11-libs/libX11-1.6.5::gentoo

I hoped to solve it with this:
Code:
DISTDIR="/mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/mnt/gentoo/" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/mnt/gentoo/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/mnt/gentoo/usr/portage"

but that did not change anything (I was focusing on the last error only at first).

I've been looking at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Gentoo_Cheat_Sheet#Package_installation_and_removal for a solution, but failed.

The output for 'emerge --info '=dev-perl/libintl-perl-1.240.0::gentoo'' is:
Code:

As far as I can tell, I cannot re-start the Easygentoo script unless I reboot. If I reboot, I start from scratch and cleaning up per above instructions has no use...

Still, I followed these instructions (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Perl#Installation):
Code:
livecd gentoo # emerge --ask --update --changed-use --deep @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                           ... done!

Nothing to merge; quitting.

Code:
livecd gentoo # emerge -uDNav --with-bdeps y --backtrack 100 @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                                   ... done!

Total: 0 packages, Size of downloads: 0 KiB

Nothing to merge; quitting.

And for 'perl-cleaner --all' I got this output:
Code:
 << BIG SNIP>>

>>> net-irc/irssi-0.8.19 merged.

 * If you have just updated your major Perl version (e.g. from 5.20.2 to 5.22.0),

/usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.22.0/XML/SAX/ParserDetails.ini

Any advises? :)

Peace!

You need to post build.log.
Anyway I don't think that use this script is a good idea, is not maintained (last change is 3 year ago).

Hello.

I found this 20 June 2016 fork, but not sure if it works. I'm under a broken Linux system and made a backup. I want to install Gentoo again, but I fogot lots of stuff so this is too time consuming for my rusty skills...

Any news?

Kind regards.

If it fails again, I'll try to find that log of yours and post it somewhere. Thanks in advance! :)

Devnullius,

Firstly, have you ever previously installed Gentoo? Irrespective of the answer though, my advice would be the same:

The easy way to install Gentoo is by following the handbook using systemrescuecd as your boot media, even then it's likely to take a couple of attempts to get it installed, and a fair bit of tinkering after you get a base system to get a setup that works optimally in your hardware / end-use environment.

If users want something that installs from a script, there's a plethora of binary distro's that will do that, none of them are even close to the power and flexibility of Gentoo. The price you pay for that power and flexibility is that you have to learn the Gentoo way of doing things, and that starts with the install - and to be honest, whilst the learning process gets easier, it never really stops.

So I guess my advice is this: to make a script work you need to thoroughly know both Gentoo, including several reasonably indispensable portage tools, and the target hardware. By the time you know Gentoo that well, you are unlikely to think that installing from a script to give users an 'easy Gentoo install' is a great idea anyway.

Cheers,

I completely agree with ian.au
