Hi Folks

I'm creating and mataining some Stages4 with alot of packges with --march=generic, I did a Initiative to intended to help novice users study the system by making it easier to install and saving compile time.

the project is on SourceForge with details about the profiles and packages list.

And of course this is open to suggestions and criticism.

What problem do you want to solve with it?
Is your stage 4 built with some particular purpose in mind? I mean, how is it going to be better than stage 3?
Of course, beside the fact that it's yours. Doing it _your_ way can be a lot of fun, which definitely is important, but not necessarily useful to other people, which you probably do care about here.

Talking about compiling time, one easy way to do this is configuring your system to use binhost whenever possible. Bear in mind you have to ignore use flags to make it usable, which kinda defeats the purpose of source-based distro, AND you have to trust whoever provides those binaries. Many people find it easier to trust source codes than machine code. You are far from being the first one to come up with this idea, but the lack of interest shown so far makes me think this market share is already taken by other distros that focus on different goals.

I did not say that this stage would be better than the official Stage 3 and I'm not trying to revolutionize anything, but I wanted to help and put it into practice, the goal was to help younger users with a stage with more compiled packages
Someone who already knows the system does not need to use this stage can do as he wants with the official stage or create his own stage.
The question is to make a difference in some way, if the list of packages is not adequate then suggest some, if there are any errors then report and somehow collaborate to help.
Does not have my name or any relationship with me at all, I do not want credit, I just want to collaborate.
Attitudes like these do not help, this is a way I found to help if you do not like I respect your opinion, but it is totally useless to me.

Otakugeek, relax. You came to _forums_. Unlike your personal blog, forums is a 2-way street, so don't get defensive every single time someone asks you a question.
To keep it short (and hopefully bearable for you):

but I wanted to help

You don't help with things that are _not_ better.
If it is meant to be helpful, it _must_ be better at least in some circumstances, otherwise there is no reason to use it at all which makes it neutral at best.

This finally discloses some information, so let's assume that "not better" was just an unfortunate statement and you didn't really mean it.

OK, so you want to help newbies. Fine.
You want to provide stage 4 for them. That's also fine.
However, it seems you have a very different understanding of gentoo stages than I do. E.g. IMO stage 3 is as advanced as _generic_purpose_ stage can be. Stage 4 calls for purpose-specific customizations, hence my question from previous post: what problem do you want to solve?

Ah, there's a light. You seem to find compilation time annoying.
Well, in this case I stick to the suggestion from my previous reply: It's not stage4, it's a binhost.

Totally off-topic, but you might find THIS interesting anyway, so I'm just leaving it here for your convenience.

I honestly do not see anything that helps in your comment, I will continue to do the stages4 if you think it does not help, so do not use.

I've already said, want to help, I'm listening, but if it's not to help then I'm not interested.

I wouldn't mind if my stage contains firefox, fluxbox+X,and maybe some network manager by default. That kind of stage4 would essentially allow me to just unpack the stage, compile kernel (unless it is included too), set up bootloader and reboot to just installed OS. Stage4 could essentially be like Archbang of Gentoo world. After Archbang install you're left with Arch Linux but some packages preinstalled.

So all in all... I wouldn't mind it. I could even use it on my low-end laptop... assuming the default packages are lighweight enough.
