I was just about to install Gentoo Linux on my new Notebook, but at the section where i should configure the linux kernel i executed "ls -l /usr/src/linux" but it said "ls: cannot access '/usr/src/linux': No such file or directory" and the command before that didn't output any errors.

Does anyone know what I may have done wrong?

Hi MisterWayne,

Wlecome to Gentoo!

You missed installing the kernel source or else missed including the symlink USE flag when installing the kernel source. See what's in /usr/src:
Code:
ls /usr/src
Report results, please.

"Missed a step," it is, then. See Installing the sources in the handbook. See the very first command you're supposed to issue, right before the "ls -l /usr/src/linux".

Edit: I'm not reading very well today it seems. You said, "The command before that didn't output any errors." It should output something, though. Can you report the last few lines of what it did output, please?

This is the full output.

Code:
(chroot) livecd / # emerge --ask sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

 * IMPORTANT: 5 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N     ] sys-devel/bc-1.06.95-r1  USE="readline -libedit -static"
[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.9.16  USE="-build -experimental -symlink"

The following license changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.license" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by sys-kernel/gentoo-sources (argument)
>=sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.9.16:4.9.16 freedist

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] Yes

Autounmask changes successfully written.

 * IMPORTANT: 6 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

Those IMPORTANTs are important. Run
Code:
dispatch-conf
to view and approve the changes to the configuration files. Then re-run the emerge of gentoo-sources.

MisterWayne,

That has prepared some configuration changes for you to review and possibly accept.

Code:
Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] Yes

Autounmask changes successfully written.

 * IMPORTANT: 6 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

The
Code:
[ebuild  N     ]
N=New shows that these packages are not yet installed.

You need to review those 6 config files in '/etc/portage'
