Just a heads up. I have no solution, no troubleshooting, and my remedy was to revert to the 4.9.16 kernel.

After booting into gentoo-sources-4.9.34, LibreOffice (libreoffice-bin-5.2.7.2-r1) would crash on trying to open a database. I tried two icedtea-bin versions, both had the same trouble. Just by luck, ran into a report by a Debian user, who pointed to the kernel. Booting into gentoo-sources-4.9.16 and the libreoffice/database problem went away.

I did try an strace. Very little output on triggering the crash (fewer than 10 lines). Somebody with better kernel-fu than I have might try the experiment, and learn something from the output. If there is interest, I can boot into 4.9.34 and save the few lines of error report for posterity.

Open a document, the Shift-Ctl-F4 to access linked database. Libreoffice crashes, no error report. Strace output ...

Code:
) = 0
futex(0x9afa980, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 0
close(4)                                = 0
futex(0xf755b104, FUTEX_WAKE_OP_PRIVATE, 1, 1, 0xf755b100, FUTEX_OP_SET<<28|0<<12|FUTEX_OP_CMP_GT<<24|0x1) = 1
futex(0xf755afa0, FUTEX_WAKE_PRIVATE, 1) = 1
munmap(0xf6634000, 65536)               = 0
munmap(0xf6e45000, 65536)               = 0
exit_group(139)                         = ?
+++ exited with 139 +++

There are 1348 commits in the range v4.9.16..v4.9.34, not counting anything that the Gentoo maintainer has backported separately from upstream. Can you narrow down the problem, at least to a specific stable release (but preferably to a specific commit)? If so, you might be able to get a kernel developer to examine the commit for hints.
