Hello, I am trying to make a UEFI bootable USB drive.
In the past, my mainboard was set in UEFI + Legacy mode. I used to burn the minimal install iso into my USB drive with universal USB installerhttps://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/.
I could see the USB option in boot sequence. when I select it, The system will boot from USB sucessfully.
But I set the mainboard in UEFI Only mode now. I can still see the USB option. After the USB option is set as the firest device, the system won't boot from USB drive. it just blink and enter UEFI interface screen again.
I have tried the dd "dd if=install-amd64-minimal-20170706.iso of=/dev/sdc", I failed too.
I wonder how to make a UEFI bootable USB drive. Could anyone help?

Most likely, the problem is not with the way how you setup USB. The kernel on USB must support UEFI mode. The SysRescueCD linked above uses kernel that supports both UEFI and BIOS modes. So USB with that image boots fine in UEFI without any tricks.

Jackie Lin,

The gentoo minimal CDs do not yet support UEFI booting.
System Rescue CD is a good choice.

But, do you still need to partition the USB drive to have a EFI partition?

it all depends on what you are doing with it.
the sysresccd procedure takes care of making an efi bootable usb drive, whether it will boot in efi or legacy mode usually is a function of choices made in the UEFI at boot time
If installing a linux system on a usb flash drive for use in UEFI mode on a UEFI capable computer that does not have an internal EFI Systems Partition, an ESP on the flash drive or another internal or external drive would be required .
