[Moderator note: changed thread title from What??? to describe OP's current problem. -Hu]

Well...
Howdoyoulikethat?!? (missing scratching head icon)

I run the testing branch of x86_64.
After a recent 'emerge -uDav,' sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.12.1 was installed. Virtualbox REFUSED to compile against that kernel.
No Biggy (I say) If I need it (VirtualBox), I'll just (re) start the kernel that supports it.
So, today I do my weekly 'uDav @world,' and discover that yes, Virtualbox compiles against the most recent ~ kernel (4.12.2) BUT AlsaSound doesn't?!?
8O 8O 8O

At the end of the day, I WANT the basics to work!
If the extras don't, so be it. I'll revert to a kernel that will!

This is the hazard of running on the testing branch. I recommend against installing every single kernel that is released. I actually keep mine stable.

If you post the error with alsa error we may be able to help.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

This really IS a head-scratcher! I compared the 4.12.1 kernel config with the 4.12.2 kernel config and it was identical!

So I removed that kernel completely, re-emerged it, copied the config from 4.12.1, did a make oldconfig, and now it works. PFM!

On this machine I run the testing branch and GENERALLY don't have much trouble. I got jammed up on the 4.12.0 kernel, with that CONFIG_USB_PCI thing. Reading the help associated with it led me to think it was something I didn't need - until I booted into that kernel and had no mouse or keyboard... A couple of the machines in the house do run the stable branch, mainly because my wife uses them. And she just wants it to work!
