I upgraded to gcc 5.4 and emerge -e @world. That's done although it was slow and I didn't know why until I started updating my special drivers.

When I emerge a package that depends on the kernel the system pauses for minutes after finding the location of the current kernel.

And sometimes gcc just pauses. I can see gcc taking 100% of the CPU but nothing happens for minutes, then it continues and finishes normally.

This is really weird. Does anyone have any ideas?

What special drivers exhibit this problem? What version are they? Where did you get them?

There are no special drivers (unless you count nvidia-drivers?).

It happens when I run make. Make sits and does nothing for about 45 seconds and then completes as normal.

Edit: while running make, one cpu sits at 100% running 5.40/cc1plus while nothing is happening.
