One way of fixing initial install problems is to install Ubuntu, which seldom fails,
and then use the Ubuntu setup to install eg. Gentoo.

I considered something like that but I don't quite see how that would work out in practice. I tried Sabayon (based on Gentoo), and I am now using Funtoo. It seems that Funtoo gives me the desired performance (network, X, gnome-light, sound, video). Funtoo does not use systemd, which might be a problem for the future.

Everybody, thanks for all the help, tips and tricks, I've learned yet again more about computers.

Install Ubuntu, use the Ubuntu install to install Gentoo on a second partition via the usual chroot,
and then add the Gentoo kernel to the Ubuntu boot menu. I've done this with Grub 0.97, and
I'd expect it to work with Grub 2.x

It's also useful to have a second bootable partition in case the main OS goes out to lunch.
