I'm facing problems at boot, when Nouveau is supposed to take over from EFI.

I tinkered like hell without luck and now I'm out of ideas.

Kernel version is 4.9.12, but other versions exhibit the same problem.

There are earlier errors that could be connected to the problem, but they are incomprehensible to me.

See the screen shot at https://s20.postimg.org/i7ocff2d9/20170902_122819.jpg

Any ideas?

jwezel,

Does the system lock up or is it a case of no console output but everything works?
Can you ssh in from another system and pastebin dmesg?

Your kernel .config on a pastebin and lspci -nn (will fit in a post) will be useful too.

It's a genuine hang, although Ctrl-Alt-Del reboots. But the system doesn't go any further than what is on screenshot.

jwezel,

lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GM206 [GeForce GTX 950] [10de:1402] (rev a1)
01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:0fba] (rev a1)
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GM107 [GeForce GTX 750] [10de:1381] (rev a2)
02:00.1 Audio device [0403]: NVIDIA Corporation Device [10de:0fbc] (rev a1)

That's two video cards. Do you have a display connected to each?
Its very easy to have the console or the card that's not being displayed.
The console is being brought up on the GeForce GTX 750. Your screen shot shows PCI bus 02.

Your graphics cards are different families. You have a NVE0 (Kepler) and a NV110 (Maxwell). I don't know how that works.

The Nouveau FeatureMatrix page shows that, NV110 support is under development too.

The way ahead.
Try each card on its own in turn. If the GTX 750 works but not the GTX 950, I won't be very surprised.

If you are not already using the testing nouveau driver, it worth testing. It may insist on testing mesa and other things too.
If it still doesn't work with the testing driver, try the live code from git.

Make it work with one card, then the other then both together.

The thing is, the very same system worked with older kernels (around 4.4, 4.6 or so).

Yes, there are two cards, for GPU computing. The 950 didn't work for display, so I put the 750 prior to the 950. I don't care much about that, as long as one of them works at all. They're both quite usable speedwise.

That worked. So I guess I have to revert to a 4.4 kernel. Sigh. I should give someone a Linus-style talk.

Nouveau testing driver: you are talking about the kernel driver, right? I mean, it's included in the kernel source, right?

jwezel,

Well caught!
I was thinking about Xorg and its part of the nouveau driver. Sorry about that.
