I know i've seen a couple ways to turn on this function, but it does not seem obvious to me which way to go about it....currently when booting from a external disk, I am routinely (not sure why?) loading linux into a kernel panic. I'd like to capture these for now to take a closer look, but from the looks of it the system has not yet booted (it happens at about 3.5 sec in) and so I can never recapture that info. Is there a way to tell grub to capture this information, or else somewhere to setup a log file in boot sector perhaps, or just in /?

You'd have to log to another write-only device like serial or printer, but usually when it fails this early, it's due to missing root filesystem or root disk driver. Especially with USB root, you need to wait a moment before mounting root to allow USB to settle, usually by passing root_delay=10 (or something like that, if I remember correctly).

eccerr0r, almost correct. It should be rootdelay=10 without the underscore :)

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.
