HI Experts, I have 2 kernel installed - 4.12.12 and 4.9.49. By default, if I reboot my server, 4.12.12 is selected and it boots up fine, however I was to make 4.9.49 as the default kernel. For this, I went to /etc/default/grub and changed this entry -

Then I ran -

# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.12.12-gentoo
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.49-gentoo
Found initrd image: /boot/initramfs-4.9.49-gentoo.img
done

I rebooted the box and it still boots using 4.12.12 kernel.

Please suggest how can I make 4.9.49 as the default kernel. Appreciate all your help in advance and thanks for your time.

I think you should change entry GRUB_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub:
Code:
# Default menu entry
#GRUB_DEFAULT=0

Actually that is what I did, just missed to post it in the question . I have -
vim /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=1

And then I ran,

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.12.12-gentoo
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-4.9.49-gentoo
Found initrd image: /boot/initramfs-4.9.49-gentoo.img

It is still booting using 4.12.12 kernel
