I have a multitouch PS/2-internally connected, laptop Synaptics touchpad that I use libinput on. When it works, mostly works just fine though a bit dodgy (much worse than Windows) but does respond to most of the same gestures just fine like tap to click, 2 finger scroll, 2-finger tap rightclick, 3 finger tap middleclick, etc.)

What I have found is if I accidentally touch or rest a palm on the touchpad during boot sometime, I think during startup of X11, the touchpad becomes completely unresponsive until the system is rebooted - simply restarting X11 does not help. If I just leave the machine alone while booting and try hard to avoid touching it at all costs, it comes up just fine and works in X11 100% of the time.

Anyone seen this behavior, or have people just been working around it (i.e., don't touch the touchpad during X11 startup!)

Perhaps there's an anti-palming gesture that will "unlock" it (though the lockout LED never lights like it does in Windows).

HAve you refit the cable? checked the cable?

Those "ribbon cables" are nasty. I have the same behaviour now on my smartphone, a "loose" connection which sometimes work for the digitizer.

No, it's completely a software issue as witnessed by rebooting (control-alt-del) always "fixing" the problem. I shouldn't have said the behavior is "much" worse than Windows, rather it seems like I'm a bit more accurate moving the cursor around and tap-to-click in Windows than libinput - seems that windows accepts a bit more slop and Linux if I'm not 100% accurate with tap to click, I move the cursor and click something adjacent...which can be quite inconvenient.
