Good morning all!

I broke my HTPC that I had in my media room, so I decided that this time I was going to use proprietary drivers instead of nouveau. After following the Nvidia wiki, installing the proprietary drivers prior to boot, I can not enter the new environment. I'm hoping this has to do with the kernel. Below is the kernel config:

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Do you mean the system starts, you can get text output, and then it wouldn't let X start whether by DM or startx?

Not quite enough information in kernel config.

Please post [a link to] your /var/log/Xorg.0.log .

Likely you need to make sure your eselect {mesa|opengl} to the right libraries (i.e., nvidia closed source drivers or something instead of nothing/dangling links).

I can not get into the kernel, locks up when it tries to load it. Most likely no Xorg.0.log since I was unable to boot into the kernel.

Okay, that's a bit more clear...

How did you build the new kernel? I would have thought you'd take your old .config and simply disable nouveau?

You should disable or set as module CONFIG_FB framebuffers and the like however.

Actually you have an EFI system, this is a bit more annoying; I got my EFI VM to boot but the kernel messages don't show up until later in the boot process... hmm.

Kernels are not very hard to build, so there's no need (in my opinion) to back up my old config. CONFIG_FB_EFI is disabled.

Yeah but it's not my fault that the kernel won't load, it's everyone else's (probably Gentoo's fault too).

FrankRizz0,

How do you know the kernel won't load?

Booting perfectly well but with the console being in black text on a black background has become more common.
Can you ssh in from another system?

With your kernel setup, I don't think you will have a visible console as you have told the kernel to use a framebuffer console, then turned off all the drivers. That means that there will be nothing on the screen between the boot loader and Xorg.

EFI framebuffer should be safe if you use EFI mode to boot
VESA FB used to work in BIOS mode - not UVESA FB any longer.
Simple FB may work too. That depends on your boot loader to configure if before the kernel starts.

Key is that you must not use a framebuffer driver that grabs the hardware or the binary blob kernel module will spot it and refuse to load.

Well the only evidence I have of the kernel not loading is when I booted into the new environment, it hung up at "Loading linux 4.12.12-gentoo ..." I did try to ssh from another system but unfortunately I could not. Turning off the EFI framebuffer was the recommendation of the wiki. I will turn the EFI framebuffer back on and see what the results are.

So it looks like I was wrong, the kernel was loading, I guess I wasn't giving the system long enough to boot before trying to ssh into the new environment. I did notice that the nvidia-drivers are not loading though, did I miss something in the kernel?
