For those who don't know what Bitlbee is I thoroughly reccomend going over to check out the website. But in a nutshell, it's a daemon that allows you to connect to multiple chat protocols via irssi (or I suppose you could use a different irc client if you absolutely *had* to).

A couple of tips for getting it going with msn that aren't immediately obvious (and took me some time to work out):
    * make sure to use the ~arch keyword. the "stable" version of Bitlbee in portage is 0.80 which had msn support suspended
    * you'll need to specify "USE=msn" on the command line with "emerge bitlbee" to get the ebuild to actually compile in msn support

So all you really need to do to get bitlbee running is:

Code:
USE="msn" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge bitlbee

then just take your favourite irc client (did I mention I reccomend irssi?) and set it to connect to the box you installed bitlbee on (this probably means localhost for most people) and the rest is easy :)

It can do jabber! The list of protocols it can deal with are: oscar (aim and icq), jabber, msn and yahoo.
