After the departure of a key engineer who installed Gentoo Prefix a while back and made it an integral part of our build system, I've been quietly attempting to document things and take over administration of the Prefix installation. I thought it would be a good start rebuilding Prefix from scratch, using the exact same prefix-overlay (prefix-overlay-20160420.tar.bz2, already downloaded) and distfiles. It got up to stage3 and hit an error building binutils:

Code:
/auto/ins-tools/leo_cel66/tmp/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r2/work/binutils-2.24/gold/fileread.cc:88:8: error: redefinition of 'struct iovec'
In file included from /usr/include/bits/fcntl.h:28:0,
                 from /usr/include/fcntl.h:34,
                 from /auto/ins-tools/leo_cel66/tmp/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.24-r2/work/binutils-2.24/gold/fileread.cc:29:
/usr/include/bits/uio.h:44:8: error: previous definition of 'struct iovec'

I've searched the interwebs and only found a couple of references to this error. Turns out this occurred during the original build as well (the logs are still on disk) but somehow he got past it. He's enough of a Gentoo guru that he could have even copied something from his home box and restarted from that point; unfortunately he doesn't recall and I'm on my own here.

It's been a long time since I worked with Gentoo so I'm slowly coming back up to speed. I really want to be able to reproduce our current env and document the hell out of it for my co-workers in case anyone ever needs to pick this up and understand the history and how to manage it in the future. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Disclaimer: I've never tried Prefix before

Hi Leomania
for what I can see, you are compiling the stage3 using the RHEL native tools (i.e. no chroot?)

Have you already tried the Prefix Bootstrap procedure? See the wiki for guidance (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Prefix/Bootstrap)

Hope this helps

Hi Kikko,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that's exactly the procedure that I'm following, the only thing unusual I'm doing is keeping the old prefix-overlay and starting from there.

Hi Leo
sorry for the delay, I haven't had chance to try out the prefix in a RHEL VM so far... I hope to find some time tomorrow

Have you tried if the latest version works, instead of using the old prefix-overlay?
