Hello Gentoo-Guys,

I decided to configure the Kernel manual, even I am a noob.

I think, I did it OK, but the compile time was a way to long, I did it by -j3. so I have build to much definitely.
I do not really like that, because it may mean, too long compile time in generally, caused by the kernel full of trash.

could I remove something later? I want to study the linux_sea.pdf and others, to have a better knowledge about and if I know what is really necessary, I could doing it.
Or is there short Handbook about? better than the gentoo Handbook?
because there is not really everything in it, and even the help feature in the make is not really full of details, so I have to do a lot of research, before I could work with my Laptop again.

But now, i want to try the CFLAGS and stuff worked for me, so I will bring this to an end and i want to try the boot.

If there is no other Option, I could do the install again with much less config "Y" in it too.
Or what ever.

Thanks for your support, btw. my keyboard is diffrent too. :D

Yes, you can remove something later. Just run "make menuconfig", make whatever changes you want to experiment with, and then build & install the kernel again, just as it's described in the Handbook.

Hey again,

i started to read linux_sea.pdf

it is great!

after a try, i started again, i want to use the make localmodconfig option,
but i was a litte to fast and did the make menueconfig first, I was in the "merde, try another config, again" mood,

so could I remove the menueconfig to get the localmodconfig back?
because, i do not want to do all of this again today.

short version, thats what i am talking about:

(chroot) livecd /usr/src/linux # make localmodconfig
using config: '.config'

Algori,

Your .config in the making is saved as .config at the top of the kernel tree.
If you remove it, its just like doing a
Code:
make defconfig

Horrible things happen if you change it with ${EDITOR} because menuconfig obeys all the Selects you can read about in the help.
You will miss them with ${EDITOR} and will get a broken kernel. Looking is harmless.

Here's a 13 year old post that outlines the process.
There are a lot more options now, so you will ned a lot more coffee :)

pappy_mcfae produced kernel-seeds.org but I think the original has gone.
There is still a mirror online though.

NeddySeagoon,

you may want to add 'make nconfig' to your choices, my favorite. I guess it wasn't available 13 years ago.

Algori,

A wee hint, or two,

As you don't have any PATA hardware, everything in your lsmod starting with
Code:
pata_
is junk.
Its extra compile time, hard drive space and as its in RAM, its taking up memery too.

Likewise all the pcmcia* modules. You don't have PCMCIA which became CARDBUS which went away.

As you don't have a real SCSI bus, if you tum off
Code:
[ ] SCSI low-level drivers
all the things in that menu will go away too.
You won't miss them.

that's not the list of drivers you need, that's a list of drivers "loaded", and it must comes from livecd.
but livecd isn't there to be efficient, livecd is there to work for any, so it just load all it could in order to run with everything.

for most devices, you can simply do lspci -k and it will tell you really, the drivers you need.
but it's only for pci devices, to get "all" drivers that are in use, look here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8098938.html#8098938
you should then find a list of "what drivers are used by my system", that's this list you should try to keep on your kernel.

I'm trying to move from genkernel and initramfs but I'm stuck with kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
I understand that I need SATA controller to be build in kernel but I just can't find the right one, I've set few that I think are the right but still the same problem.
Modules I've set to be build in kernel are ahci, ata_piix, pata_acpi, ata_generic
Hopefully someone can help me here.

Here are lsmod and lcpi -k :

kajzer,

Here's the hint

Code:
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) IDE Controller (rev 01)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. P5KPL-VM Motherboard
   Kernel driver in use: ata_piix

Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. NM10/ICH7 Family SATA Controller [IDE mode]
   Kernel driver in use: ata_piix
   Kernel modules: ata_piix, pata_acpi, ata_generic

Code:
ICH7 Family SATA Controller [IDE mode]
In your BIOS, switch out of IDE mode. Its crippled as it was only intended to be used once by Windows XP users, so they could install the SATA driver, then switch away from IDE mode forever. By crippled, I mean that you don't get the full functionality of the chip set.
If it has 6 ports, t best only 4 work. It may be very slow. Some legacy modes didn't even allow DMA to be used. The driver may change when you switch to SATA mode.

You need your partition table compiled in, The entire SCSI stack, that's SCSI, SCSI Disk, the ATA menu, the IDE menu must be off and your chip set driver.
Press / and search for piix.
You also need the root filesystem built in.

Thanks for the hints; I'll try later tonight.
As for BIOS I already looked before, I don't think I can choose that, I can only choose between sata, pata and sata+pata
Take a look here :
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/548761/Asus-P5kpl-Vm-1394-Si.html?page=64#manual
Don't know where else I can switch out of IDE mode, maybe there is a way but I can't find it.

Edit : Seems like Asus disabled ahci in p5k boards due to some licensing issues, there are some flash roms which enable them back but I'm not willing to play with that, it works fine in ide mode.
If I can manage to avoid initramfs without ahci I would be fine with that.

Edit2 : Actually I made it, it was pretty easy, wonder why I didn't think of that way before, trick was to use "make localyesconfig" , that's all there was to it :)
