I upgraded from gentoo-sources 3.10.107-r1 to 4.4.112 - Gentoo runs as guest OS under Hyper-V.

My old kernel still boots without any problems, but the new 4.4.112 causes OpenRC to hang at "Caching service dependencies" - any ideas?

CONFIG_HYPERVISOR_GUEST=y
# CONFIG_SYS_HYPERVISOR is not set
# CONFIG_HYPERV_STORAGE is not set
CONFIG_HYPERV_NET=y
CONFIG_HYPERV_KEYBOARD=y
CONFIG_FB_HYPERV=y
CONFIG_HID_HYPERV_MOUSE=y
CONFIG_HYPERV=y
CONFIG_HYPERV_UTILS=y
CONFIG_HYPERV_BALLOON=y

Disabling CONFIG_HYPERV_STORAGE did the trick. OpenRC 0.34.11 is now booting without any problems :wink:

Don't know why OpenRC refuses to start with CONFIG_HYPERV_STORAGE enabled.

In my previous kernel 3.10.107 the flag was enabled and OpenRC was able to boot, but not in 4.4.111-r1 or 4.4.112. Strange!

The flag CONFIG_HYPERV_STORAGE is for SCSI support, but I am only using one IDE HardDisk, so I think it's good to go without it.

SCSI device support --->
SCSI low-level dribers --->
Microsoft Hyper-V virtual storage driver

I see a possible relationship with https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1075670.html but this user report it happen only with a 4.14.14
You may check how the links are made with your kernel, using ata- or scsi-?
