PostPosted: Sat Feb 17, 2018 10:27 pm    Post subject: Xorg - Screen not found Reply with quote

Hi everyone!

I am former Arch user, who decided to try Funtoo.

Installation went well until I had to emerge Xorg.

I have AMD video card, so I added VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" to make.conf and switched to "desktop" in epro, just as wiki says (https://www.funtoo.org/X_Window_System), but when I tried to test Xorg by running "startx" - I got an error "No screen found".

Does it require some kernel modification? I am new to this kind of stuff.

Any help will be appreciated and thanks in advance,

Johny.

PS. I know it is Gentoo forum, but I'm quite desperate and Gentoo community seems more active. 8)

Yes you need to enable DRM in kernel.

Thanks for answer!

I tried like this:
Code:
<M> Direct Rendering Manager

to
Code:
 <*> Direct Rendering Manager

saved config and then

Code:
modprobe radeon

next

Code:

make -j5
make modules_install
make install

and then updated grub to boot into new kernel.
All I got was kernel panic. :(
What I'm doing wrong?

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software.

Funtoo is not Gentoo and is not officially supported here.
That does not mean you won't get help with Funtoo.

Sorry I'm occupied today and have no time to think with you, I dropped a working kernel with AMD to pastebin for you to compare with yours.

johny800,

Code:
[    62.700] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
[    62.700] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

Means that Radeon or amdgpu kernel support is missing, or not loaded.
From your log, thats a HD 6970, which needs Radeon support.

You may or may not be able ta add module like you tried to do.
If you changed any settings to <*>, meaning built in, the kernel binary in /boot will change, so its a full rebuild, install and reboot.

Do check your
Code:
uname -a
after the reboot.
Are you really running the kernel you think you are?

If you have kernel panic, grub don't found root partition.

Sometimes, grub failed to set correctly root partition.
When you are on Grub boot screen, edit default boot option and change root=UUID=(uuid) with root=/dev/partition (root partition).

And see if it's working. If that work, edit /etc/grub.d/10_linux file and change this lines (just remove uuid parameters):
Code:
if [ "x${GRUB_DEVICE_UUID}" = "x" ] || [ "x${GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID}" = "xtrue" ] \
    || ! test -e "/dev/disk/by-uuid/${GRUB_DEVICE_UUID}" \
    || ( test -e "${GRUB_DEVICE}" && uses_abstraction "${GRUB_DEVICE}" lvm ); then
  LINUX_ROOT_DEVICE="/dev/nvme0n1p2"
else
  LINUX_ROOT_DEVICE="/dev/nvme0n1p2"
fi

(it's my file)

It's very good you change archlinux to Gentoo , you will learn a lot of things. You'll see, Gentoo is really a high quality OS compared to archlinux. :)
