Seems like framebuffer cannot be turned off altogether in kernel 4.14.18 in menuconfig. Can someone confirm, and if so, why was this done? I generally turn off framebuffer for my purposes. I can turn off all individual modules, just not the fb option itself.

Do make nconfig, go to menu item, hit F2, scroll down, then scroll right, there are the options "Selected by".

Ah, yes, thanks. This should help.

EDIT: It did help. All I needed to do was turn off the fb support option for DRM. All fb needs to be off for nvidia-drivers, or the driver won't load and things complain it's not loaded.

So I've heard. But I couldn't get a bootable kernel without efifb compiled into kernel. Nvidia-drivers work fine dedpite the presence of FB_EFI in kernel.

Yeah, I've had that issue, but also I *just* figured out that this particular laptop has an Optimus setup. So I've spent two days banging my head against that wall. Hopefully now that I know better, I can get Bumblebee working.
