I thought I knew how to do this

I want to try "enable_guc_loading=1 enable_guc_submission=1"
on my skyake i7-6600U

so I change /etc/conf.d/modules to include:

Quote:
modules="i915"
module_i915_args="enable_guc_loading=1 enable_guc_submission=1"

But after rebooting I have

Code:
systool -vm i915
....
   enable_guc_loading  = "0"
    enable_guc_submission= "0"
...

So what have I done wrong?

sorry to reply to myself but adding boot parameters
enables these features

perhaps the i915 module loads too early for /etc/conf.d/modules
to have any effect ??? I'm still curious ...

From Arch's wiki:

Quote:
For Skylake and newer processors, some video features (e.g. CBR rate control on SKL low-power encoding mode) may require the use of an updated GPU firmware, which is currently (as of 4.14) not enabled by default.

It is necessary to add i915.enable_guc_loading=1 i915.enable_guc_submission=1 to the kernel parameters to enable it. Alternatively, if the initramfs already includes the i915 module (see Kernel mode setting#Early KMS start), you can set these options through a file in /etc/modprobe.d/

So I would say yes, either add it as kernel parameters or fix initramfs.
