I want to upgrade kde-plasma/kwin to 5.12.4 : 5.

I am running following command :

emerge -avDu kde-plasma/kwin

But I get following error :

Code:

Any ideas ?

Installed eix and ran following command :

Code:
emerge -av1uD xorg-proto $(eix -IC# x11-proto)

Got following errors.

Code:
[blocks B      ] sys-apps/systemd ("sys-apps/systemd" is blocking sys-fs/eudev-3.2.5, sys-auth/elogind-235.2-r2)
[blocks B      ] sys-fs/eudev ("sys-fs/eudev" is blocking sys-apps/systemd-236-r5, sys-apps/gentoo-systemd-integration-7)
[blocks B      ] sys-apps/gentoo-systemd-integration ("sys-apps/gentoo-systemd-integration" is blocking sys-fs/eudev-3.2.5)
[blocks B      ] <sys-libs/slang-2.3.2_pre23 ("<sys-libs/slang-2.3.2_pre23" is blocking sys-libs/ncurses-6.1-r2)

Looks like some kind of circular dependency.
systemd blocks eudev,elogind
eudev blocks systemd

I am doing something horribly wrong.

Hello.

Looks like you got ran into a mess with systemd. Then, if running with systemd as init, you should get rid of eudev (at least), as systemd contains udev already. Otherwise you should try and find out what brings systemd in as a dependency.

I followed steps to make steam work on Gentoo :

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Steam

One of the dependency is "dbus" which in turn uses "systemd".
Other than that I don't actually need "systemd".

Can I try getting rid of "systemd" ? Any risks involved in that ?

KDE Plasma + steam + Nvidia driver works for me even without "systemd".

You can post full output of command
Code:
# emerge -av1uDvt xorg-proto $(eix -IC# x11-proto)

I updated the packages with :

Code:
emerge --update --keep-going --deep @world

"xorg-proto" is upto date.

Updating world does't seem to work now. Too many portage blockers :

Code:

$emerge --update --changed-use --autounmask-write --deep @world

First you need to add some packages in package.use
Code:
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
...

You should decide whether to use consolekit or elogind but not both.
If you choose elogind see the relative guide

I masked "consolekit" now.

Also used :

Code:
emerge --update --changed-use --autounmask-write --deep @world

To add packages in packages.use

Now, if I try to install, "kde-plasma/kwin-5.12.4"

using :

Code:
emerge --ask --oneshot =kde-plasma/kwin-5.12.4

I get :

Code:

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] Yes

Autounmask changes successfully written.

 * IMPORTANT: 66 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

No error but package is not installed either.

Any comments ?

First, for plasma you can't mix stable and ustable package.
If you want to install unstable plasma the solution is unmasking all package kde-plasma and kde-frameworks
Code:
# echo "kde-plasma/* ~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
# echo "kde-frameworks/* ~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
