Hey guys,

Got to renew my computer here and I was thinking on the Legion Y720 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAA0S7BP4923. To be honest, it doesn't have to be precisely that one but I need something with around that power (It HAS to be Nvidia for CUDA) and around that price tag. This specific computer, as I have seen, has some troubles with the SSD that makes it mandatory to use Secure boot which SEEMS to be solved by following this https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Sakaki%27s_EFI_Install_Guide/Configuring_Secure_Boot (I hope it works) and also seems to have some troubles with the graphics card in other distros + not being able to use some features in Linux (Backlight things and something called "supercooling" . With 17 years in the Linux community with Dual Boot (need it only for gaming tho, in fact, I haven't logged into windows in like 2 years now), I have learned to research thoroughly before buying a computer so I don't end up with a month of troubles setting it up completely.
Having said this, do you guys think that these problems are "real", persistent and would make you think about another system?
Do you have a more Gentoo-Friendly system recommendation around this power in mind?
Las time I fought for over a month with a stupid Broadcom Wireless card and the stupid Broadcom-sta drivers and uff..... don't even get me started on that one, it was a pain for a month

Awesome! Thanks a lot. And could you tell me something about it's compatibility with Gentoo dual booting with win 10? That's a must for me, have been on Gentoo for many many years but need win for some stuff. Till now I've been using reefind but this is my first ssd and have heard that u can't turn off secure boot

I was looking for better specs for the same price. I can not give a hands on review, I do not own an MSI GL62MVR 15.6" FHD Gaming Notebook. I do have an MSI motherboard home brew dual booting Windows 10 and gentoo. MSI still produces bare bones laptops for the hobbyist and rebranding markets. MSI notebook forums show linux users.
