What are you trying to achieve?
If update system after "emerge --sync", than yes.

I'm using openrc, and in my case command to update system is:
Code:
emerge -avuDN --with-bdeps y --changed-deps --keep-going @world

It sounds like you just want to install and run it like you would a normal binary distro.

Well, for the most part you can, though compiling for your system, cpu, etc is one of the strengths of gentoo.
