Hi all,

Something strange is going on with the 4.14.65 build process - see details below.

Follow these steps:
-- emerge 4.14.65
-- set symlink
-- copy .config from 4.14.63-r1 to the new
-- run olddefconfig
-- make prepare
-- make
-- make modules_install
-- make install
-- make modules_prepare
-- emerge -v @module-rebuild

the last command succeeded, but for each VBox module there is a message
Code:
echo >&2 "  ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.";           \
echo >&2 "         include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\
echo >&2 "         Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.";      \

when checked, folder /usr/src/linux-4.14.65-gentoo/include/config/ does not exist (checked for 4.1463-r1 its there)
so i tried to do silentoldconfig instead of olddefconfig - error is the same
however both files include/generated/autoconf.h and include/config/auto.conf exist
sounds like a config problem?

probably correct chunk of output is
Code:
test -e include/generated/autoconf.h -a -e include/config/auto.conf || (      \
   echo;                        \
   echo "  ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.";      \
   echo "         include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\
   echo "         Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.";   \
   echo;

notice the 'test -e' before, that's just saying it will echo that if those files are missing

Exactly is only a echo of possible error when the files are missing, if error occur you see only
Code:
  ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.
         include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.
         Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.

You can test this with
Code:
$ test -e /usr/src/linux/include/generated/autoconf.h -a -e /usr/src/linux/include/config/auto.conf || (      \
   echo;                        \
   echo "  ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.";      \
   echo "         include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\
   echo "         Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.";   \
   echo; \
)
