Installed slim and xfce based on these guides -

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SLiM
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xfce/Guide

Was able to get xfce working with this -

echo "exec startxfce4" > ~/.xinitrc
startx

Tried with slim, it was able to get to the login screen and log in but the screen would be black. Had this error in /var/log/slim.log -

slim: open_session: Unable to open session: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

Added this which fixed that log message -

rc-update add dbus default

Now when slim logged in it would say failed login instead of a black screen. Found that if out if you hit F1 at the login screen then it will say "Session: Xfce Session" and then it would log in. Was not able to get this to be the default. So eventually solved this by editing this in /etc/slim.log to use ~/.xinitrc after log in -

login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
#login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login /usr/share/slim/Xsession %session

Hi!

try add XSESSION="Xfce4" to /etc/env.d/90xsession

Xfce gentoo guide :

SLiM can automatically start your Xfce session if you add XSESSION="Xfce4" to /etc/env.d/90xsession:
root #echo XSESSION=\"Xfce4\" > /etc/env.d/90xsession
root #env-update && source /etc/profile
