PostPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2018 5:49 pm    Post subject: chroot illegal instruction Reply with quote

Hello .

i am just facing a problem on my other laptop , they are both x86_64 with arch , but when try to execute :

mount --types proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

i got illegal instruction .

i know that most faced this issue , but others mistakes was that they downloaded wrong stage3 tar ball , in my case i have added stage4 which is made from my virtual box then add it into gentoo minimal live cd amd64

thanks

typically you would do

Code:
mount --types proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/sys
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/dev

Not just mount /proc

And of course it assumes you have a partition mounted at /mnt/gentoo

I believe the problem lies here, your CPU is missing an instruction which is enabled in your stage4.

You should specify emerge --info of laptop that you create stage4 and the cpu info of second laptop

fedeliallalinea

i don't think that this is the reason since both are 64, with same cpu family

Maybe but I would check if there is a difference, also with
Code:
$ gcc -march=native -E -v - </dev/null 2>&1 | grep cc1

It probably is the reason. The illegal instruction did accidentally hopped on board.

Problems can generally be quicker solved by volunteers with requested data.

You can try to convince the helper that he is wrong, but I don't think that is usually a good thing for the solving time.

actually the main difference between is that mtune=ivybridge On host machine and mtune=core2 on the targeted laptop , what do u suggest in this case

zux0x3a,

-mtune only changes the instruction ordering, not the instruction set itself.
We can't work through a keyhole with paraphrased or summarised information.

Illegal instruction means that the CPU is being presented with an instruction it does not know how to execute.
That means the code was built with either the wrong CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS or the wrong CPU_FLAGS_X86 or all three.

I suspect mtune=ivybridge shows -march=ivybridge and mtune=core2 shows -march=core2.
If so, that's your problem a core2 will not run some code built for an ivybridge.

Show us the entire output of that one liner from both systems.
Show us
Code:
emerge --info
output from both machines.

zux0x3a,

Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx mmxext sse sse2"

That will produce run anywhere code on Intel/AMD 64 bit systems. -march is not given, so code will be generated with -mtune="generic"
Has this always been the case or do you have some binaries built with -march="native"?

Don't run this as root, run it as a normal user.
Code:
grep march /var/db/pkg/*/*/CFLAGS
tell. The right answer is nothing.
Its searching all your installed packages CFLAGS settings for march and there should be none.

Test
Code:
grep march /var/db/pkg/*/*/CXXFLAGS
too.

Its safe too look in /var/db/pkg but not to modify it. Your normal user should have permissions like that.

On the target, what does /proc/cpuinfo contain?
The output for the first processor will be enough.

Quote:
Using -march=native will cause the compiler to generate machine code that matches the processor where it is currently running when optimizing code.
This will generate the best possible code for that chipset but will likely break the compiled object on older chipsets (assuming backwards compatibility).

-mtune=native will “tune” the optimized code to run best for the current chipset but will still allow backwards compatibility with older chipsets.

It is important to note here that -march trumps -mtune. If you specify them both (like we were), you will get optimized code that can only run on that chip or newer chips.

mm while testing what you have mentioned it is shows march=native .

how can we fix it into none ?!

zux0x3a,

All the packages built with -march=native must be rebuilt.

You can rebuild everything with
Code:
emerge -e @world --with-bdeps=y --keep-going

Its worth doing a single package that has -march=native in that
Code:
grep march /var/db/pkg/*/*/CFLAGS
command as a test, to make sure its no longer in the output of that command after its been rebuilt.

Code:
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe"
should give you -mtune="generic" by default.
Its safe to add it.

Comparing the actual flags and omitting the one(s) not present will give better results than blunt -mtune=generic.

Teorically just remove the gnome overlay (not the packages) resolve the problem

zux0x3a,

Code:
[blocks B      ] <dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.54.1 ("<dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.54.1" is blocking dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-1.54.1

The < in <dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.54.1 is key here.

Code:
emerge -1 dev-libs/gobject-introspection
should fix the block.
Its complaining about versions of dev-libs/gobject-introspection < 1.54.1 being installed.
