I'm currently tearing my hair out trying to get Gentoo to boot.

I'm on a fresh install and have just merged my x11 drivers (Nvidia + i915/intel) then rebooted to find:

Code:

* Mounting /proc
* Mounting /run
...
(all the usual OpenRC stuff)
...
* Setting up xdm
* starting VirtualGL
* Waiting for xauthority

I can't find anything within my OpenRC config that alludes to xauthority or xauth and I have tried merging xauth again to see if it helps.

Can anyone shed any light on what this means?

I can boot my recovery option from grub and edit the system but can't boot my normal kernel.

Many thanks,

Opafix

OpenRC is not at fault, it is your Xorg that doesn't load. In case this is Optimus make sure you have followed Gentoo Optimus Wiki.

This is indeed Optimus with bumblebee / bbswitch. I will go back and see if I missed anything from the wiki Thank you.

The issue turned out to be the Bumblebee was dependent on xdm and vgl. XDM relies on Xorg, and Xorg was incorrectly configured to use the nvidia module. The nvidia module had been blacklisted so wasn't loaded. Hence the hang....

I've since done a lot of research into Bumblebee and compiles the Gentoo Bumblebee Wiki Page for all others who are struggling like I did to install it. I hope this can be of use.
