Hey all. So, I, a large noob, was going through the Gentoo install, and I came across a strange error. While I was trying to install genkernel, I ran into the following error:

Code:

(chroot) livecd / # emerge --ask sys-kernel/genkernel

 * IMPORTANT: 13 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

 * IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.use/zz-autounmask' needs updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20181001  USE="-savedconfig"
[ebuild   R    ] sys-apps/util-linux-2.32-r4  USE="static-libs*"
[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/genkernel-3.5.3.3  USE="firmware -cryptsetup (-ibm) (-selinux)"

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by sys-kernel/genkernel-3.5.3.3::gentoo
# required by sys-kernel/genkernel (argument)
>=sys-apps/util-linux-2.32-r4 static-libs

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No] Yes

Autounmask changes successfully written.

 * IMPORTANT: 2 config files in '/etc/portage' need updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

Can someone explain what this actually means to me? And why on earth I need to be mucking around with Portage in the base install? I would understand post-install, but its odd, especially since the Handbook doesn't appear to make any mention of it.

StevenC21 ... sure, you've provided '--ask' and so '--autounmask-write=y' is set:

man emerge wrote:
--autounmask-write [ y | n ]
If --autounmask is enabled, changes are written to config files, respecting CONFIG_PROTECT and --ask. If the corresponding package.* is a file, the changes are appended to it, if it is a directory, changes are written to the lexicographically last file. This way it is always ensured that the new changes take precedence over existing changes. This option is automatically enabled with --ask.

So, in order to meet the useflag requirement for sys-apps/util-linux[static-libs] package.use/zz-autounmask is updated. You're then expected to run either 'etc-update', or 'dispatch-conf', and merge the changes.

You may not like this behavior and so can add following in 'make.conf':

/etc/portage/make.conf:
EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="$EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS --autounmask=n"

Hopefully that explains things ... best ... khay

StevenC21,

I'll add a little to khayyams explanation. The use of genkernel is optional. I choose not to use it.

However genkernel requires sys-apps/util-linux built with the USE=static-libs.
Putting USE=static-libs into make.conf is a bad thing becase every package that supports optional static libraries will be built that way.
Then they will all need to be updated when the libraries change.

Portage understands per package USE flags, that's explained in the handbook.
You should create the file /etc/portage/package.use/util-linux containing a comment as to what and why its there and the active entry
Code:
sys-apps/util-linux static-libs

Portages --autounmask suggestions are not always correct. Using --autounmask and accepting the changes without understanding will lead to a world of pain.
In this case, its harmless.
