Hello,

When installing Gentoo with Gentoo's "install-amd64-minimal" CD. At booting, the GRUB inside the CD gives two options to load:
    (kernel: Gentoo)
    (kernel: Gentoo)(Cached)

Just wondering what the 'Cached' version means?

Thanks.

Draenin,

Once upon a time, it was common to download the ISO, burn it to a CD and boot the system with it to install Gentoo.
That's all very well if you have several CD drives or you don't need to put another CD in the drive, which if you were using the Gentoo Reference Platform, you would want to do.

To get around this, the minimal install CDs had a 'Run from RAM' option so that the the install CD could be removed from the drive.
It looks like its that option.

Nobody uses CDs any more. Even data DVDs and Blu-rays are rare now.

You can also use a USB Stick, where the minimal install CD iso is written to, to run the installation.

http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/Download/

Better use SystemRescueCd for installing, it works well in wide range of hardware/configs and is fully Gentoo compatible.
