Hi,

I'm running gentoo on my desktop environment for quite some time.
I recently bought an Intel Nuc 8i5BEK to lower my overall power consumption.

Unfortunately, the gentoo usb stick with the minimal image on it won't boot.
Actually it does boot, but the screen remains black.

I have already tried with the nomodeset and the ACPI_osi="Linux" parameter but both do not work.
The computer is responsible, as I can reboot it and shut it down, but the display is not showing anything.

Some days ago, an similar issue was discussed here https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8273634.html.
Darkshine was able to fix this problem by disabling "graphics on boot" in bios, but I cannot find a similar setting on my NUC.

It was suggested to boot with the gentoo-nofb argument, but that gives a file not found error.

Could anybody help me with that problem?
Thank you very much!

Best regards,
Martin

First, welcome to gentoo forum!

Try with SystemRescueCd that is gentoo based but with best hardware support

Thank you for the warm welcome, fedeliallalinea!

As I‘m currently at the office I can that attempt today in the evening.
The systemrescuecd can be installed to a hard drive if I remember that right.

In the case that works, is there a way to revert to a minimal „stock“ gentoo installation?
I always liked that approach to build my system from the bottom up.

Thank you very much!

You should use systemrescuecd like a gentoo minimal cd, just for boot, and then continues with install following gentoo handbook

Got it, thank you.

Unfortunately, the problem persists with Systemrescuecd.
The Nuc is responsive, but the screen remains black.

Tried with both HDMI and DisplayPort (Thunderbolt), but none of them works.
Just tried Arch in order to be sure that there's no hardware problem or something like that, but Arch worked just fine.

I had a similar problem with a NUC two years ago. Check if you have the latest bios

I did that, but that it didn’t solve the problem unfortunately.

What worked was booting with a 4.18 kernel.
So I downloaded calculate Linux 18 and this booted without any problem. Also the screen did work.

Finally I was able to install Gentoo and build a 4.18 kernel.
Everything works perfectly fine now, thank you!
