NeddySeagoon,

I sure appreciate all your patience and help. I have successfully booted into my kernel, I've only made one slight error. I didn't add a Windows menu entry in grub.cfg. While that's not such a HUGE deal, as I do know how to create this menu entry, and have for the most part, I'm stuck on finding my Windows boot partition (i.e. hd?, gpt?). Is there a way to find it? BTW, Windows is on sda, Gentoo is on sdd , I'm not sure if that makes a difference. In the meantime, I'm going to proceed to install MATE, which would be a lot easier if I could just ssh in from the other machine I'm using, however, I san't seem to get that to work, lol.

Thanks

Todd

todd93,

You can't ssh in as root by default using a password. That's a safety feature.
You can use key a based login though.

The alternative is to create a normal user, who is a member of the wheel group.
You can ssh in as that user then
Code:
su -
to become root.

Lastly, there in the dirty hack. Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Find
Code:
#PermitRootLogin prohibit-password

and change it to
Code:
PermitRootLogin yes

Now restart sshd and you can log in as root with a password.
Sympathy will be minimal when an attacker gets in that way.

WIndows ... I vaguely remember that. I have not had Window at home since 2002.
That's long enough so I don't get asked to fix Windows any more. :)

NeddySeagoon,

I have to say thank you, I'm up and running!! I did change the permission in /etc/ssh/sshd_config long enough to ssh in and finish up some things, now I have fully restored it, and am able to ssh into my user account and just use
Code:
su

Now everything isn't perfect with the install, as my sound isn't working yet, and some other minor things, but the important thing is that I am in the environment, using the gui to write this post!

Once again, thank you! I appreciate it more than you know, this one is now SOLVED!

Todd

PS, I did fix grub and can also boot my Windows drive when I need to now as well, I used os-prober, for those who may be wondering.
