My laptop has a resolution of 3000x2000 on a 13.9" screen. I have tried Xft.dpi: 240 (and other values) in .Xresources; I tried forcing -dpi 240 in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc and also xrandr --dpi 240 in ~/.xinitrc.

I'm using the intel modesetting driver and it looks to be loading with glamorgl.

My terminus font is set to size=12 in .Xresources and going any higher just makes the font bold.

The only way to get a reasonably sized terminal font is via xrandr --scale 0.8x0.8 but that isn't ideal as it uses some kind of bilinear filtering and on top of that, I need to specify this new virtual resolution to all apps like wine virtual-desktop.

I've tried various use flags in rxvt-unicode including later versions but no luck.

I run Xorg + i3-gaps.

The larger sizes of the bitmap font aren't bold, that's just a consequence of the stem width rounding up to 2px. They have separate bold variants.

You might want to give terminus-ttf a try.

Thanks for the tip. I tried terminus ttf and there's something very wrong with the way it renders including the line spacing is very large and urxvt apparently won't accept a negative lineSpace setting.

There must be a way to somehow scale up regular terminus a bit more. I tried -*-terminus-medium-r-*-*-32-*-*-*-*-*-*-* which is the max and is indeed the highest I can get Xft:Terminus to go as well. I figure even a 36 or 40 would be enough. Interesting that Xft.dpi can't scale things further? Could it be I hit a limit on the size terminus can render?

Changing dpi won't help here, as it's a bitmap font; it'll adjust the variant used if you specify it in points but that's about it. IIRC there used to be a way to tell fontconfig to stretch bitmaps to any size (with the expected tradeoffs), but nothing I tried in fonts.conf seemed to make it work.

Darn, looks like I'll need to return this laptop then. I have another laptop that is 2560x1600 at the same screen size and terminus looks perfect. Guess I'll need to steer clear of something too hi of dpi... Thanks anyway, I learned a bit more about fonts in this exercise.
