lo-jay,

Well
Code:
/dev/sda1 97M 16M 77M 18% /boot
/dev/sda5 256G 138G 106G 57% /home
/dev/sda6 14G 7.7G 5.5G 59% /usr
/dev/sda7 4.0G 411M 3.4G 11% /opt
/dev/sda8 4.0G 627M 3.2G 17% /var
/dev/sda9 9.9G 151M 9.2G 2% /tmp
are all in their own partitions, so we can rule them out.

How much space does /bin, /etc, /lib/, /lib64, /mnt, /root and /sbin take up?
Code:
du -h -d1 /bin
and so on.

linux-firmware, if you install it all, is over 512Mb in /lib/firmware.
/mnt should we almost empty be if you put something there without doing a mount, then it goes into your root filesystem.

You may find it useful to arrange that /mnt/USB on the root filesystem is not writable, so that attempting to copy files to it without mounting a separate filesystem will fail instead of copying to the root filesystem. When another filesystem is mounted there, the permissions of root's /mnt/USB will not apply.
