I've got an old system (Intel Core 2 era) that I'm setting up as a media PC. It's got integrated nForce nvidia graphics, but with nouveau I can't even scale a youtube video without massive frame drops, so I'm trying to use a GT710 PCI-E card instead. Aside from terrible graphics performance, everything was working correctly with the onboard graphics.

I just installed gentoo over the last week or two, so all the software and kernel are at latest stable (4.14 kernel). Kernel is manually configured for nvidia-drivers, nouveau drivers not built into kernel nor as modules. Init is systemd.

With the GT710 card installed, the system boots, loads grub (no framebuffer), and starts loading the kernel. Almost immediately, the system freezes and the black background of the screen turns green (but the white text is still there). What I can see on the screen at this point doesn't indicate anything obviously wrong. I'm looking over my shoulder at another screen to type this, so I'll abbreviate the first bit:

Code:

(TCP hash tables configured)
(UDT hash tables configured)
(RPC registered udp, tcp, tcp NFSv4.1 backchannel transport modules)
ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0._PRT: Found unexpected NULL package element (20170728/nsrepair-233)
ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0._PRT: Found unexpected NULL package element (20170728/nsrepair-233)
ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0._PRT: Found unexpected NULL package element (20170728/nsrepair-233)
ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0._PRT: Found unexpected NULL package element (20170728/nsrepair-233)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [AUBA] enabled at IRQ 23
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [AUB2] enabled at IRQ 22
pci 0000:02:00.0: Video device with shadowed ROM at [mem 0x000c0000-0x000dffff]

I've googled both the ACPI warning and the shadowed ROM message, and I've only seen these appear in posted logs where the actual boot failure happens much later (eg, can't mount root fs), so these don't seem to be a smoking gun (and I don't know what to do about them if they are a real problem).

This doesn't seem like very much to go on, but maybe someone has seen and fixed this sort of issue before?

Thanks!
