I've been messing about with an old 10Zig thin client that I have been building Gentoo on just to see how well I can get it to work.

It has the crappy Cedar View non-standard Intel PowerVR chipset for which there was a very buggy closed source driver around kernel 3.10 but was never updated:

Code:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Atom Processor D2xxx/N2xxx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)

The box boots fine and I can get 1024x768 frambuffer and Xorg display with:

Code:
CONFIG_DRM_GMA3600=y

set in the kernel.

Looking online, I came across this Arch Linux article, it mentions a "modesetting" driver that is included with xorg-server. I assume this would be built as a module in the same way the Intel one is built when you set "VIDEO_CARDS=intel" in make.conf.

However, there's no "modesetting" driver in xorg-drivers:

Code:
$ eix xorg-drivers
[I] x11-base/xorg-drivers
     Available versions:  [M]1.19 1.20 **9999 {INPUT_DEVICES="elographics evdev joystick keyboard libinput mouse synaptics tslib vmmouse void wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu ast dummy fbdev freedreno geode glint i915 i965 intel mga newport nouveau nv nvidia omap qxl r128 radeon radeonsi siliconmotion tdfx tegra vc4 vesa via virtualbox vmware voodoo"}
     Installed versions:  1.20(19:28:23 21/01/19)(INPUT_DEVICES="evdev mouse -elographics -joystick -keyboard -libinput -synaptics -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev intel -amdgpu -ast -dummy -freedreno -geode -glint -i915 -i965 -mga -nouveau -nv -nvidia -omap -qxl -r128 -radeon -radeonsi -siliconmotion -tdfx -tegra -vc4 -vesa -via -virtualbox -vmware -voodoo")
     Homepage:            https://www.gentoo.org/
     Description:         Meta package containing deps on all xorg drivers

I've also searched for "modesetting" drivers on in the Gentoo Portage Overlays site, but nothing comes up in the search.

I feel like I am missing something here - Gentoo pages on "modesetting" talk about KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) which I assume is to do with framebuffer, not Xorg.

My kernel version is 4.14.83 if that helps.

The modesetting driver is bundled with xorg-server for quite some time now, to be fully functional, be sure to have USE="glamor" set. It should be use automatically by the xserver when running without an xorg.conf and a kms drm kernel driver is available for the graphics used.
