Greetings,

I've installed Gentoo on my MacPro 5,1 -- it's working except that the fans are running high, at a constant rate.

I've got my kernel compiled with ACPI options and anything else for lm_sensors and mbpfan, but still the fans are consistently loud. This isn't the case when running under OS X (dual-boot system).

I'd like to keep Gentoo around, but I'm worried that without proper fan control, it's going to wear out the hardware sooner than later.

Any tips/tricks/suggestions are welcome.

Many years ago, I posed an ebuild for this. The bug remains open to this day, like many ebuilds in the Gentoo bugzilla . Sadly,I no longer possess the hardware meaning i cannot run-test it anymore, and i have not compile tested it in years. Feel free to give it a try, if it doesn't compile I can probably whip the ebuild into shape so it will again.

Edit: On second thought, upstream for macfanctl appears to be dead and app-laptop/mbpfan seem to be a replacement that has an active maintainer and is in portage. I would go for that one instead.

Thanks; I will pursue mbpfan in more detail
