I upgraded a mythtv system I had from 2013/14 to latest (17.0). Kernel installed is Gentoo Sources 4.17.19, due to nvidia drivers not working beyond that for my card. I'm running LIRC 0.10.1 as well.
I am experiencing an issue with LIRC deciding to "go to sleep" for my remote. A different remote works fine, and once it "wakes" the other remote works as well, until it doesn't again..

I reached out to the LIRC list, and one of the ideas was to go back to the earlier version of LIRC that was working fine.. An admirable idea, if not for the fact that it will not work with the installed kernel.
The kernel I was using previously was Gentoo Sources 3.16.5, anyone ever considered installing a 3.x kernel with an 17.0 system before? Any foreseen issues?

I already figured out that to do so, I need an earlier GCC install, so I'll have to compile a 4.9 version, and switch to it to compile the kernel... Just trying to build it on 8.x it complains about a missing gcc8.h include lol

The problem is that old kernels may not be compileable with newer gcc. You could try installing an older gcc and using that to build your kernel.

That being said, binutils and glibc (maybe) could also introduce problems... And best if it were possible to update the driver to the new kernel if it's also OSS...why it isn't fixed in a new kernel is the question: what driver and what hardware?
