LegionOfHell,

That message says that llvm failed but not why.
Make friends with wegetpaste and follow the instructions in the first four lines of your image.

If you want a wild guess, you ran out of memory and the Out of Memory Manager killed one of your compile threads.
That will be easy to spot in dmesg and the build log.

Your -j3 may want 6G RAM, does your VM have that much?

Your guess was so correct, it went through this time...I want to install gentoo on my two other laptops and I have two other questions:

(1) For a laptop with a dual core(1 thread per core) CPU with 4GB of RAM ... what should the value of MAKEOPTS be ?

(2) For a laptop with a quad core(2 threads per core so 8 threads in total) CPU with 16GB of RAM...what should the value of MAKEOPTS be ?

Neddy's post suggests you need 2G RAM per compilation, so for the numbers you quote, that would be -j2 and -j8, respectively. It's completely safe to pick a value that is too low. It will take more time, but produce the correct result. If in doubt, pick a cautious value, monitor the build, and raise the value later when you are satisfied that your initial choice is leaving resources unused.

LegionOfHell,

My 2GB/thread is for large packages. Most won't want that.
However 2GB/thread sets a safe upper limit on MAKEOPTS.
If you have less threads than RAM GB /2 GB. Set MAKEOPTS equal to the lower number as a starting point.

As you push the number of parallel make jobs up much past that, you get 'cache thrashing' where one thread displaces the instruction and data cache of another, so it has to be fetched from much slower main memory when the first thread runs again.
The net result is that build times go up.
