Hello,
I update my kernel from time to time, and I thought going to kernel 5.0.5 was a good idea, but apparently I get to my xorg-server session, tty7 stays on a simple static cursor.
I've tried @rebuild-modules, updating to latest xorg-server with its dependencies but no dice.
I see I've kept on nvidia-drivers-390.116-r2 as my laptop has a GT620M (and it is the latest supported release).
Does anybody know if those drivers support such 5.0 kernel?
Meanwhile I'll try to go to to newer and unsupported drivers (410,415,418?) on the hope that it works...
Thank you all!
Or just maybe, the problem is not nvidia-driver related, I have no idea, I just know is that it is the same kernel config and kernel 4.20 works. |

Yes 390.116 support kernel 5.x, see http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2513 _________________ Questions are guaranteed in life; Answers aren't. |

Yep, I've tried newer drivers, but they refuse to load, and I've read on the nvidia website that those should work on the 5.0 kernels.
I was misdirected, as the nvidia driver only loads after optimus. Thus it is not the problem this time.
I've tried going to 5.0.7 and still no X server, then I tried to the latest 4.20, this being gentoo-sources-4.20.17 (I was 4.20.12) and it FAILED too!
So there is a clear regression when I boot gentoo-sources-4.20.17 (I get no X and every time I switch to tty7 sddm crashes. I have a working PC on 4.20.12.
My CPU is an intel i7-3517U, which I think is haswell 7th gen i965. what can I do to help solve this? Is anyone else affected? |

Apparently I was very lost, but now I have seen the light, my problem is that Xorg crashed upon starting, not rendering a (mouse) cursor, using my embedded i915 gpu.
It seems that this commit: https://lkml.org/lkml/2019/2/25/594 affecting the file drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_fbdev.c on the kernel sources was the culprit.
I manually reverted such modification on a 5.0.9 kernel and I'm now typing this, it is not clear when the Xorg team will fix this, but this is what let me move past 4.20.12 kernel ! |
