what for? what nonsense? What is stage3 compressed with? trying to unpack tar.xz

Code:

tar xJvf stage3.tar.xz
tar xpvf stage3-*.tar.bz2 --xattrs-include='*.*' --numeric-owner

nothing works. why do so? What is the point? would have done a regular archive without showing up.

Keep calm! :-)

1) Where did you get that file from?

2) What do the statements below tell you?
Code:
ls -la stage3.tar.xz
and
Code:
file stage3.tar.xz
and
Code:
xz -t stage3.tar.xz
echo $?

and yes, thanks for answering. Gentoo Russian-speaking forums consider themselves to be great specialists and do not want to talk with simple noobs.

OK, I just downloaded the file from https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/ and I get:
Code:
# ls -la stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz
-rw-r----- 1 user user 236.949.644 May 26 22:34 stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz   ### check file size

# file stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz
stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz: XZ compressed data

# xz -t stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz
# echo $?
0        ### 0 means: file is OK

# tar xvf stage3-amd64-nomultilib-20190522T214502Z.tar.xz
./
./sys/
./sys/.keep
./bin/
./bin/echo
./bin/grep
...

Everything is fine here. What is different on your machine?

Just out of curiosity: You do unpack the archive to a mounted device with eough space?

xz -t stage.tar.xz

Did you unpack with:
Code:
--xattrs-include='*.*' --numeric-owner

It might help to prevent problems in the future.

tar xJvf

The J option tells tar you are trying to decompress with bzip2. It was compressed with xz so that is why if was failing. tar will detect the compression and use what is appropriate. you can just use:
Code:
tar xpf stage3-amd64-nomultilib-*  --xattrs-include='*.*' --numeric-owner

If it fails it will usually tell you why it failed with an error message explaining why it failed.

Acutally J is for xz - it's j that's for bzip2.

I was wondering why no one mentioned it... Heh, my mistake.

These days I don't use -j or -J any more, and let tar autodetect the compression.
