Hi,

I have setup a virtual environment on my laptop to try different operating systems. How do I achieve this with gentoo? and does it require any different steps? :roll:

@archiecormer,

Welcome to Gentoo!

In general the install process should be the same. You can boot the minimal install CD in the virtual environment and proceed from there just as the Handbook describes. You will, of course, need to be aware of how the virtual environment provides disks and other devices (e.g., video). Many (most?) emulate some generic hardware so the normal process of discovery as described in the handbook Just Works(tm).

Why don't you give it a try and ask questions as they arise?

archiecormer,

The simple answer is no, install for the virtual hardware that your virtualisation software provides to guests.

The more complex answer depends on both your host install and virtualisation software.
Many provide virutalio that does not require the use of the hardware offered to the guest.
Both work for Gentoo. virutalio is more complex to set up but usually faster.

Switching is possible too, so make it work first, make it better later.
