Hi Guy's,

I know this is a tinfoil hat question, but I think it's a prudent question.

Is Gentoo connected to Google in anyway, financially, policy, grass roots? or better put, influenced by Google? :?: The reason i ask the question, they use Gentoo as their primary OS, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Very interested to hear your thoughts. 8)

kkinkouu,

Short answer ... No.

Longer answer, several gentoo devs are employed by Google and other household name companies and are set to work by their employers to work on Gentoo.
Its not clear if everything they do is contributed back. Unless, its actually distributed there is no legal requirement to do so.
Like all employees, they work at the employers instruction, not Gentoos.

Its no secret that Google uses (or use to use) portage to build ChromeOS. That's not the same as using "Gentoo as their primary OS"
Portage is a very flexible build system and has a lot going for it as a lool to build a large project like ChromeOS.

Gentoo is not connected to any companies in anyway.

That's not about to change any time soon. Gentoo does not have the internal structure and organisation to accept a contract to do something by a certain date.
All the developers are volunteers, so cannot be coerced to work on things that don't interest them.

Gentoos income and expenditure is a matter of public record.

Google doesn't have any involvement with Gentoo. Only Sony does.

Gentoo is actually connect to many companies, even indirectly, github is not a foundation and hold our repo ; which is against our social contract, because gentoo now depends fully on a commercial company (!).
Gentoo is connect to google, as each time i see Google Summer of Code, it's under Gentoo umbrella, which directly connect Google and Gentoo name
Gentoo is connect to each of its sponsor, as example the latest https://www.gentoo.org/news/2019/04/16/nitrokey.html

krinn,

Your use of the word depend is key. The master Gentoo repo is on Gentoo infrastructure.
Github is only a mirror.

When PRs are filed on github, they are not merged there, they are merged to the master repo on Gentoos infrastructure. Then they appear on github when it updates from the master.
Gentoo does not therefore "depend" on github, which is compliant with the social contract.
Github is useful and convenient but Gentoo does not depend on it.

Gentoos sponsors usually make donations of systems without any strings attached. Its up to Gentoo how they are used.
In return Gentoo provides advertising if sponsors request it.

Google Summer of Code is a competition. There are lots of projects proposed. They are not all seleted.

Gentoo does not sleep with anyone. Sponsors do not direct Gentoo development.

Android was based off Gentoo at some point in the past. I'm sure they have developed beyond that point by now do something different. Maybe that is where the idea stems from?

That's just wrong, everything on GitHub is just a mirror from gentoo.org repositories. Dropping it would disturb a few workflows, but in no way shut you or us down.
