I’m trying to install gentoo on another computer. I was having problems with grub at the end of the install and made a tar copy of everything. I decided to redo the install procedure but I want to use the saved world file and copy Firefox from my previous save. How do I do this? To copy the world file, I think I can
Code:

copy over the /etc/portage/package.keywords, pakcage.mask, package.unmask and package.use files
move over the old /var/lib/portage/world file
Then: emerge --update --deep --newuse @world -p

Since Firefox took hours to compile, I want to copy that over to the new install. How do I do that.and will world file move work? Thanks

Hello Chris6,

since gentoo compiles the packages from source it heavily depends on the hardware and settings the resulting package depends on. So using the package files should be fine but using the already compiled firefox on another PC could easily not work

If you built firefox with FEATURES=buildpkg, you already have a tbz2 that can be installed elsewhere without recompiling. If you did not, then quickpkg can create the tbz2 from your installed Firefox, and will include the appropriate Portage metadata.
