I've recently managed to install Gentoo on a LG Gram 17", great laptop so far. Problem is the touch pad refuses to be identified or work with Gentoo, even though it worked fine with the Gentoo based systemrescueCD I used. Under SystemrescueCD it identified as
Code:
04CA00B1:00 04CA:00B1 Trackpad
I've followed the synaptics wiki page, including adding the i8042 additions to the kernel command line. No luck.
xinput shows a virtual pointer:
Code:
xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer                          id=2    [master pointer  (3)]
⎜   ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer                id=4    [slave  pointer  (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard                         id=3    [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard               id=5    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                              id=6    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus                                 id=7    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button                              id=8    [slave  keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button                              id=9    [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ LG Camera: LG Camera                      id=10   [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard              id=13   [slave  keyboard (3)]
↳ LG WMI hotkeys                            id=14   [slave  keyboard (3)]

lspci and lsusb show the same on both Gentoo and the systemrescueCD.

Another thread mentioned that if it doesn't appear in lspci or lsusb then it may be a PS type, so I built all the available options into the kernel.
Kernel .config: http://dpaste.com/3FZGSVW

The only difference is the lsmod from the systemrescuecd, but it does not show anything trackpad related. The closest I can see is mousedev or possibly hid_multitouch.
SystemrescueCD lsmod:

Any ideas? I'm assuming that I've missed something simple, but I've been bashing at it long enough that I probably don't see the obvious flaw.

Thanks for any assistance.

can you paste/bin the full dmesg? it might be hiding in there somewhere, i think a lot of trackpads are i2c/smbus based but yeah they wouldn't show up in lspci/lsusb. i don't actually think there is a command that shows them...

cheers

Ignore the SilconWin mouse on the USB port, it's an external I connected so I can use the laptop.

hmm, i'm not seeing anything in there that stands out. can we try enabling a couple options though?

Code:
CONFIG_RMI4_CORE
CONFIG_HID_RMI

hopefully that's the one we're missing. :D

Searching for the trackpad ID gives no results. The 04CA belong to Lite-on Technology, a USB id. The 00B1 belongs to EGO Systems and Wacom, another USB id, neither of which form a complete match. On a side note, Genkernel of two days ago, does not work for finding the majority of the hardware.

i looked around a bit online last night too and i couldn't find much on how to get it working, but can we see the dmesg from the livecd? if it works there, maybe it'll give us a hint.

Systemrescuecd dmesg: www.pastebin.com/e2hh7MDj

I'm not holding much hope for the designware as it is a SOC i2C driver, but in the dmesg it is linked to the trackpad by name and id, and at this point straws are worth grasping. :-).

So built in HID_Multitouch failed and i2c_designware isn't working.
Code:
grep -i multitouch .config

Reading https://github.com/Syniurge/i2c-amd-mp2/issues/11 Led me to check

The trackpad id is the first device, so it is visible via /sys even if it doesn't appear through /proc

The i2cdetect is:
Code:

i2cdetect -l
i2c-3   i2c             i915 gmbus misc                         I2C adapter

i2c-0   smbus           SMBus I801 adapter at efa0              SMBus adapter
i2c-7   i2c             DPDDC-C                                 I2C adapter
i2c-5   i2c             DPDDC-A                                 I2C adapter

Problem being other then the 1915 video, I have not even the slightest what the others are.

And as an end note, could a moderator move this to kernel hardware where it belongs. :-)

Well I figured a way to get the trackpad working. Copied the config from the Arch repo for the systemrescuecd, removed all the html tags, editted it to add the necessary modules for booting, and after tossing make install to the curb, it worked.

For those who want a working, but bloated kernel config for an LG Gram 17, here it is: http://dpaste.com/1QFTM8K

And here is the /etc/conf.d/modules to load the mostly necessary modules to make it work.
Code:

cat /etc/conf.d/modules
# Linux users can define a list of modules for a specific kernel version,
# a released kernel version, a main kernel version or all kernel versions.
# The most specific versioned variable will take precedence.
# FreeBSD users can only use the modules="foo bar" setting.
#modules_2_6_23_gentoo_r5="ieee1394 ohci1394"
