I'm working on building a new Gentoo box out of an old HP MediaSmart EX470. So far, I have been having issues installing and compiling.

Here is one of the issues, the make.profile symlinking to something other than the typical spot:
Code:
(chroot) lancache /etc/portage # ls -l
total 20
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  717 Oct 26 23:30 make.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   59 Oct 24 02:52 make.profile -> ../../var/db/repos/gentoo/profiles/default/linux/amd64/17.1
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Oct 24 02:52 package.use

Should I change this to the typical /usr/portage area or has something changed?

I compiled Gentoo on an ODROID-HC1 and HC2 last month and didn't have any issues.

EDIT: Is emerge-webrsync required now? I have my entire portage directory located on an NFS share and just mount that.

/usr/portage is old place for portage tree, new place is /var/db/repos/gentoo.

Depend where is placed the portage tree, if is in /var/db/repos/gentoo you should change nothing.
What you have in /etc/portage/repos.conf configured?

Things have changed, see bug 378603.

Hmm, I still have
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   51 Oct 24 00:05 make.profile -> ../../usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/17.1/
and I did my current install this summer or late spring - so after that discussion you referenced.
Should I change that now?
Sorry @Simba7: Not trying to hijack anything, just stumbled over this topic.

Up to you. But I don't see any reason not to change it.

Thanks. Is it as easy as changing
Code:
PORTDIR=/usr/portage
to
Code:
PORTDIR=/var/db/repos/gentoo
in make.conf? Do I have to move the files over myself or will portage do that on its own?

PORTDIR is depreciated, use /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo instead or at least change in both places.

Code:
cat /etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf
[DEFAULT]
...
[gentoo]
location = /usr/portage

If you're changing the location pointer I'd go ahead and move it.

You have to move them yourself. John R. Graham posted instructions here. And as Anon-E-moose said, PORTDIR in /etc/portage/make.conf is deprecated, it has been replaced by /etc/portage/repos.conf.
