Hey all!

I've got a fresh computer build, and finally managed to get some free time to dive into a full Gentoo installation that I've been wanting to take on for quite some time.
Sadly though - I haven't managed to get a setup that would work with the AMDGPU drivers.

I've tried several different permutations of the config, but it's become apparent that I have no clue what I'm missing or misconfiguring.
I've gone through a bunch of relatable (same or similar symptoms of failure) topics here in the forums, and haven't managed to get any to work.

The build works fine on a bootstraped arch linux installation that I used to quickly check whether everything works together.

I've done the configuration of the kernel in two steps:
First is everything from the AMD64 handbook, which works perfectly - I can fully reach the system, login and have full access of the system.
Afterwards I'm applying the suggestions from the AMDGPU wiki page, I've tried to compile the AMDGPU driver both as a module
and built into the kernel (with the firmware files compiled in as well).

The problem that I get after adding AMDGPU is that during boot, I get to see the kernel messages for a second or so, and then the screen
tears up and goes black - the GPU fans go crazy, and I also can't use the keyboard.

My lspci:

My working config file after AMD64 handbook installation:

My config file after AMDGPU wiki:

I'll keep looking, but any help is greatly appreciated!

use newer Kernel, e.g 5.x.x - 4.19.x doesn't support current Graphic Cards >> that's why the system goes black and the fans of your card screaming 8O

using RX590 here as modules >> to do so, you don't need to take care of Firmware etc.

good luck :D

I want to cry.

Thank You so much! That hit the spot.
I can finally start working with my first successful gentoo!

I can't believe that I spent so much time and effort on this,
And in the end it's yet again a version related problem.

Uh, no. Something broke from a recent Gentoo change. I've been using 4.19.x for quite a while now with a vega64 and it worked ok, until I just recently updated from portage. Some change, like a pam change, fucked the whole thing and now I can only boot by blacklisting amdgpu. Been trouble shooting this a few days now and even rebuilt entire world because there was a gcc update too. Kernels that previously worked fine with amdgpu are now failing
