i have a GIGABITE 512GB SDD as primary drive now for 1 year.
suddenly at boot got 'boot device not found'. in bios the drive was recognized. did a multiple soft/hard reboots with the same result.

booted KNOPPIX to take a look. the drive was listed with lsblk but fdisk did show no partitions and space = 2MB.
smartctl did output:

Code:
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
Read SMART Self-test Log failed: scsi error badly formed scsi parameters

after unplug/plug of the power and SATA cable the disk was recognized correctly and started to work correctly.

SDD is a new technology to me and i did not see something similar before. did you? any thoughts?

Could be that the cables (electrical connectivity) were a little loose and this was fixed when you unplugged/replugged.

yes this is what possibly was the issue. but why did the system recognize a 500GB SSD as 2MB??? in my previous experiences it was either working fine or not at all. is this some new feature of SSDs?

I've never seen that particular behavior, but the reason I mention the connectivity is that if it only got some of the data being passed or it got mangled due to connectivity it might explain that behavior.

aftermath: now the hdd went again invisible in BIOS. had to replug to other SATA port. also i had issues when burning DVDs. after repluging that too some other SATA port it did burn fine.
seems that 10y+ motherboard is slowly degrading now and i will have to do a PC upgrade next months...
